Intensity-modulated radiotherapy (IMRT)

IMRT is a new, special form of radiotherapy in which irregular radiation intensities are generated by irradiating many small fields from as many different directions as possible, which then produce a dose distribution that is as conformal as possible in the three-dimensional superimposition.

In addition to dose escalation in areas particularly at risk of recurrence, IMRT also allows better protection of the healthy tissue surrounding the tumour. In summary, IMRT offers greater tumour efficacy with a reduced rate of side effects. This technique is used in particular for the radiotherapy of head and neck tumours and prostate carcinomas. Other areas of application are gastrointestinal and gynaecological tumours.
