Hygiene for patient safety

Anyone who comes to hospital wants to be cared for in a healthy way. Nevertheless, the risk of contracting germs is high in hospitals of all places. Yet two thirds of such infections could be avoided with consistent hygiene measures.

Patients are usually weakened and therefore particularly susceptible to infections. One of the tasks of hospital hygiene is to minimise the risk of infection for patients in hospital.

Hand hygiene

One of the most important measures in the fight against nosocomial infections, i.e. infections acquired in hospital, is hand hygiene. Consistent compliance with this is trained and then checked by means of recurring observations.

Infection prevention

In addition, the hospital hygiene department at Claraspital develops measures to prevent and spread pathogens, including multi-resistant germs, and defines guidelines.

In order to check whether the measures are being adhered to, certain surgical procedures are recorded by swissnoso, the national centre for infection prevention, to determine whether a post-operative wound infection occurs. This allows the Claraspital to compare itself with other hospitals and take further measures in the event of deviations. The annual spot checks on the frequency of nosocomial infections and antibiotic use (point prevalence survey) provide information on whether the measures are effective.

Patient safety is a top priority at the Claraspital.

A patient safety committee is constantly working on a consistent and constructive safety culture, monitors compliance with legal requirements and regularly sensitises our employees.

Interdisciplinary working groups draw up improvement measures, guidelines and directives and ensure that these are implemented.

These include:

Patient identification bracelets (PIA)
Wearing the wristbands enables each patient to be clearly identified at all times.

Critical Incident Reporting System (CIRS)
CIRS is a kind of early warning system. Employees report any need for action or weaknesses in processes. The CIRS committee analyses this feedback and proposes measures for improvement. In this way, incidents that could occur can be avoided in advance.

Regular risk and process analyses
We regularly review our processes with regard to the safety of our patients and initiate optimisation measures where necessary.
