Clarunis - University Abdominal Centre Basel is the joint competence centre of the Claraspital and the University Hospital for all patients requiring treatment in the abdominal area.
Welcome to Clarunis at the Claraspital site
The medical services offered by Clarunis University Abdominal Centre Basel include the treatment and therapy of all diseases of the abdominal organs and the thyroid gland. Clarunis provides visceral surgery and gastroenterological primary care at its two sites, Claraspital and University Hospital Basel.
Clarunis combines the expertise, research activities and number of patients treated at both hospitals in order to further increase and improve the quality of diagnosis and treatment.
At Clarunis, specialists in gastroenterology, hepatology and visceral surgery, specialist nursing staff (endoscopy, stoma/wound therapy, etc.) and case management/medical secretarial staff work very closely and in an interdisciplinary manner with the specialists and nursing staff of the two parent hospitals.
Highly specialised interventions
Highly specialised visceral surgery includes
- Removal of the oesophagus for oesophageal cancer (oesophageal surgery)
- Partial or complete removal of the pancreas in the case of carcinoma/inflammation (pancreatic resections)
- Partial or complete removal of the rectum, especially in the case of tumours (rectal surgery)
- Complex bariatric surgery for morbid obesity (bariatric surgery)
- Surgery on the liver with removal of tumours or metastases
Highly specialised oesophageal, rectal and bariatric surgery is performed at the Claraspital Basel, while highly specialised liver surgery is performed at the University Hospital Basel. Pancreatic resections are primarily performed at the Claraspital Basel; complex procedures, e.g. with vascular resection involving vascular surgery, in cases that cannot be operated on with certainty in the first instance, as well as procedures for patients who cannot be transferred for health reasons, are performed at the University Hospital Basel.
It is scientifically proven that hospitals and surgeons who frequently perform highly specialised procedures have a lower complication rate and better long-term results, with the number of highly specialised procedures at the Claraspital increasing by over 40% in 2023.
